Everyone, including their mother, wonders about this question, and the truth is that yes, they can... BUT it all is do to incorrect application and inadequate aftercare.

Applying lashes involves more than just the act of applying them - there are various factors to consider. It is important to assess the health of the natural lashes, whether they are full, sparse, short, long, thin, thick, have a high pH, low pH, and so on.

Adding extra-long extensions to very short lashes is a common way in which a lashtechnician can contribute to improper application. This can cause strain on the natural lashes due to the weight of the extensions, resulting in premature shedding and a thinning, more fragile natural lash line.

Improper isolation by your lash technician can also lead to damage of natural lashes. Each eye typically has between 90-150 natural lashes. If the technician rushes and fails to separate the lashes correctly during the extension application, they may clump together, causing discomfort for the client. Considering the natural lash cycle, our lashes progress through three stages: Anagen (active growth), Catagen (transition), and Telogen (resting). When an Anagen lash becomes entangled with a Catagen lash, the Anagen lash continues to grow, eventually pulling out the Catagen lash prematurely, disrupting the natural lash growth. With repeated occurrences, the lash follicle may become damaged, ceasing hair production altogether.

As a client, it is important to note that you can also play a role in causing damage to your own lashes if you do not take proper care of them. Failure to wash them daily can lead to eye irritations and infections, with the most common being blepharitis. This condition is typically caused by an overabundance of bacteria or clogged oil glands at the eyelash base. In other cases, it may be due to an excessive presence of microscopic lash mites known as Demodex residing in the eyelash follicle. Neglecting proper care can result in weakened lashes that fall out prematurely.

Pulling on your lashes can also cause lash damage resulting in traction alopecia

After considering everything mentioned, make sure to research the lash technician you plan to visit. Don't hesitate to ask questions; they should be willing to provide answers. Additionally, as a client, it is important to follow the correct aftercare instructions.

Overall, when applied and maintained correctly, lash extensions do not harm the natural lashes.
